{"id":3823,"date":"2022-07-09T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-07-09T05:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modinst.lu.lv\/?p=3823"},"modified":"2022-07-14T22:01:25","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T19:01:25","slug":"a-new-publication-particle-tracking-velocimetry-in-liquid-gallium-flow-around-a-cylindrical-obstacle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modinst.lu.lv\/en\/a-new-publication-particle-tracking-velocimetry-in-liquid-gallium-flow-around-a-cylindrical-obstacle\/","title":{"rendered":"A new publication: Particle tracking velocimetry in liquid gallium flow around a cylindrical obstacle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A paper \u201cParticle tracking velocimetry in liquid gallium flow around a cylindrical obstacle\u201d by the researchers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/modinst.lu.lv\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Numerical Modelling<\/a> (INM) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Mihails-Birjukovs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mihails Birjukovs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Peteris-Zvejnieks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peteris Zvejnieks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Andris-Jakovics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andris Jakovics<\/a> \u2013 was published in the journal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00348-022-03445-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Experiments in Fluids<\/a>\u201d  on June 1, 2022 by researchers from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Tobias-Lappan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tobias Lappan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Martins-Sarma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martin Sarma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Sascha-Heitkam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sascha Heitkam<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Sven-Eckert-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sven Eckert<\/a> and by researchers from Paul Scherrer Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Pavel-Trtik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pavel Trtik<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/David-Mannes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Mannes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This publication shows the measurement of particle velocity in liquid metal flowing around a cylindrical obstacle using algorithms previously developed by INM researchers to determine particle trajectories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The publication presents an image-processing methodology designed to detect particles in neutron radiographic images with high noise and low particle contrast, as well as the use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00348-022-03399-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MHT-X tracking algorithm<\/a> to reconstruct particle trajectories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial results show that the developed methods ensure consistent detection of particles and the recovery of long, representative, and plausible particle trajectories. This is achieved, among other means, by using particle image velocimetry data as additional information to predict particle motion. However, the need to introduce a better approach to extrapolation of particle position important to further increase tracking accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article provides&nbsp;a number of recommendations on how to obtain better results with the existing tools.
